AVIF → JPG / PNG: open and convert .avif files

AVIF is a new image format that many sites now serve, but older programs, editors and upload forms often cannot open it. MSGView turns .avif files into ordinary JPG (or PNG) in your browser — one by one or all at once. The images are not uploaded anywhere.

Convert AVIF to JPG in 3 steps

  1. Drop the .avif files Drag one image or many onto the page.
  2. Check the list Each image gets a thumbnail and the name it will be saved under. Transparent AVIF is saved as PNG so it does not get a white background.
  3. Download Download each image, or all of them as one ZIP file.

What is an .avif file?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) stores photos at a fraction of the size of JPG, so websites use it to load faster. When you save such an image, you get an .avif file that Windows Photo Viewer, older Photoshop versions and many forms do not accept. Converting it to JPG or PNG makes it work everywhere.

JPG or PNG?

JPG is saved at 90% quality, which is hard to tell from the original; you can choose 80% or 95%. JPG has no transparency, so a transparent AVIF is saved as PNG unless you choose “All JPG”. An animated AVIF (.avifs) is saved as its first frame.

Your location stays private

The new file does not carry EXIF data: no camera, no date and no GPS location.
